Return to the Tips & Tricks Archive. You may have noticed them hanging out in a corner of the room at a game session, or been smacked down by one of them for ignoring social order, or had one support you for a position. They're the Non-Playing Characters in the game, and they can be your new BFF or your worst nightmare, depending on how you interact with them. By default, NPCs don't give a fuck about your character. Most PCs are below the notice of an NPC. So, the question you have to ask yourself, is do you want them to notice you, or do you want to stay anonymous. The advantage to making sure the NPCs know who you are, is they might be willing to help you. Of course, you might also piss them off. Here are some of the Dos and Don'ts of working with PCs. Do show them deference. They are all more powerful than you, so don't make the mistake of thinking you can treat them like a peer. Don't ask them to do something for you that you could do yourself. Never try to delegate to an NPC. They are there to support characters, but not to be a crutch. Do offer them boons for favors. If they can help you get further in your clan or covenant, or get something you need or want, offer them boons in exchange for their help. Don't waste their time. Get to the point and get out. Do help them look successful. One of the best ways to get a promotion is to get your boss a promotion. Then their position is open, and if you were instrumental in their success, they will likely recommend you. Don't try to fight them unless you have to. This can mean politically or physically. Either way they probably have you outclassed. That being said, sometimes it's necessary, or a really good opportunity you can't pass up. If you decide to plot against them, that's fine, but be prepared to deal with the fallout if things go badly. |
