Return to the Tips & Tricks Archive. It's bound to happen eventually. Your character makes the wrong step, and you end up a pile of ash. It doesn't matter how many times you tell yourself it's just a game, when your character dies it can still be hard to deal with. Sometimes, it's not as bad, because you wanted the character to die so you could try something new. Other times, you didn't really have a choice in the matter, and it feels like something being done to you. In both cases, the character is equally dead, and it's an opportunity to tell a kick-ass story. Ultimately, it doesn't matter how your character ended up in the situation that means they are well and truly fucked. They are about to die, and after a certain point (called the "I'm fucked" point) there isn't much you can do about it. Think of this as your character's last chance to shine, and make their death mean something. No one likes to fade away, undead creatures of the night least of all. Whether you're bored with the character, or have just been trapped by your rival and her gang of thugs, make the most of it. The death of a character should always have an impact on the game. If it looks like you're about to die, pull in an ST and explain that you would like to make sure your character has a good death. Generally, players and storytellers want to make sure player death doesn't leave people upset and/or frustrated. Of course, there may be circumstances where you have constraints to work within, but it's always better to try to work something out. The first thing you should do is work with your situation. If a bunch of PCs are trying to kill you, and it's pretty obvious they'll succeed, ask if you can mess one of them up. Nothing that will kill their character (unless they like the idea), but that might scar them, or in some other way cause a lasting effect on their character. Try to convince one of them to betray their fellows, or whatever works for you. Just do something, and don't worry about whether it's successful or not! If you're bored with your character, and want to try something new, work with an ST to make sure the old character gets a good death. Have them die as they burn down an anarch compound, or have it introduce a new plot line. There are a lot of options, you just have to ask for some help. Of course, you can always come up with something juicy on your own and then run it by an ST. Another way that you can have your character's death mean something and/or have real impact is to have them be prepared. Have contingencies in place so that if you die, dirty secrets you know are revealed, or you are able to strike out at your enemies in some way. The most important thing is to be prepared, and if your character is about to die, work with everyone involved to have it be as fun as possible. |
